The benefits of berberine

The compound Berberine is found in the bark, roots and rhizomes of barberry, goldthread, and goldenseal. It has been used for centuries in Ayurveda and Chinese practices. The following benefits have been scientifically studied and many more are being scientifically explored.

  • Blood sugar control: Berberine has been shown to help to regulate blood sugar levels, increase glucose uptake by the cells, and reduce liver glucose production. Many studies show it can be excellent at managing blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism in 2012 compared berberine to the oral drug Metformin and found that both treatments were similarly effective in reducing blood sugar levels.
  • Weight management: Berberine has been found to influence gut bacteria composition, increase metabolism, promote fat breakdown, and inhibit fat cell growth.
  • Cholesterol management: By regulating lipid metabolism and inhibiting the rate of cholesterol production in the liver, berberine therefore will help manage cardiovascular health. It may increase HDL, lower total cholesterol, lower LDL (low-density lipoprotein), and triglyceride levels. A meta-analysis published in the journal of cardiology in 2014 studied random controlled trials and concluded that berberine significantly reduced total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides.
  • Antimicrobial activity: Berberine has been shown to exhibit antimicrobial activity against viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi. It can stop the growth of various pathogens.
  • Neuroprotective effects: Berberine could be beneficial in neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. Some studies suggest it may help reduce oxidative stress, inflammation, and amyloid plaque formation in the brain.

As with any supplement or medication, it’s recommended to consult with a healthcare professional before starting berberine or any new treatment.
