What is Reiki?

Reiki and how it can ease anxieties

By Dawn Koller

When a loved one is experiencing a low point in life, whether it be from an illness or some aspect of emotional distress, do you feel the urge to comfort and soothe them with calming energy or presence? If so, you have channeled a sliver of how Reiki could be the door to much more.

As individuals, we are much more in control of our physical, spiritual, mental and emotional well-being than we were ever led to believe. As this awakening happens, people are seeking out more tools to help themselves and others’ well-being.

Based on compassion, Reiki is an alternative healing modality that continues to grow in popularity. Pronounced “Ray-Key”, “Rei” means universal, and “ki” means lifeforce energy.

There are different types of Reiki and different levels of training. The more widely known type was created in Japan in the 1920’s by Mikao Usui. Usui believed illness happens when the life force energy is disrupted, and he believed we are able to correct the flow in ourselves and others.

As most people know, the body is made up of matter and energy and that energy flows throughout the body. The Reiki practitioner lays their hands on or above the fully clothed individual to aid that energy flow in the body.

Anyone can learn Reiki by attending a class and being attuned (by symbols, breathwork, meditation) by an individual with a lineage connecting back to Usui. There are 3 levels; Reiki I, Reiki II and Reiki III – Master. You can take Reiki I and be done or take all 3, it depends on your interest and how you wish to practice it.

Reiki is non-intrusive, it can be provided anywhere as there aren’t any tools or equipment involved in the session. Reiki is very beneficial to those who experience stress or anxiety regularly. It aids in deep relaxation, clearing the mind and helping one focus, improving sleep, and reducing stress and anxiety for humans and animals. Yes, animals! Animals can be placed in traumatic situations that can leave lasting anxiety. Animals can also take on the stress and anxiety of their owners.

Reiki can also be incorporated with other healing and relaxation modalities like a massage for a deep healing relaxation session. The next time you see Reiki being offered, ask questions to see if it is a fit for you. n
